Introduction

Hi. My name I Michael. I've been studying, playing, and recording music since 1963. This is my history, my songs, and my insight on music and it's industry. On this website, I've included a collection of music I've written and/or performed over the years.

Much of this has never been heard before. It is in chronological order with some background and history thrown in. There are mp3 audio files, pictures, and as of late, some videos.

This website is dedicated to all the great musicians and singers I've had the pleasure of sharing some time with. Without them, I would have never been able to do anything.

Who am I?

Though we are all special in one way or another, I don't consider myself any more special than anyone else. I was born June 28th, 1947, and grew up in Madison Wisconsin. My father was a butcher and worked for Oscar Meyer for 30+ years. Our family was lower middle class and never experienced most of the finer things in life. After high school, I went to Wisconsin School of Electronics. Then, knowing the music business was never going to bring me the financial security I wanted, joined the Telephone company in 1968. In 1977 I moved to Ft. Lauderdale Florida and then in 1991 moved to Dallas Texas.

My musical background

From the age of 8 to 10 I spent a lot of time shut up in a room by a mean old grandmother who hated men and was watching me and my sister. While in that room I would play make-believe and one day started banging on an old piano the previous tenants had left behind. I found that I could play the basic melody of almost any song I had heard. And even though it was rough, and crude, it was there that I discovered my love of music.

When I was around 10 years old, I noticed my mother had a Gibson acoustic guitar. One day I picked it up and started plucking some strings. I'd never heard my mother nor anyone else play, so I had no real information on what to do. However, I did find a couple of chord books by Mel Bay in the guitar case and started reading those.

When my parents discovered that I was plucking that guitar and that I could at least make a simple melody, they asked a county performer they knew to stop by and talk to me. He came over and showed me a couple of basic chords and how to hold my hands.

At that point, I decided the guitar was my first love. I started learning all the leads to Johnny Cash songs that either my mother had on a record or that I heard on the radio. By the time I was 12 I could play all the major chords and the leads to almost all the Johnny Cash songs that had been on the radio.

When I was around 15 I asked my parents for an electric guitar. Though they really didn't have the money, they recognized that I had some talent and went to Sears where they had an account and purchased an Airline Guitar and a Silvertone 2X12 50-watt amplifier.

They probably regretted that move because from that point on, I practiced in my room for 4 to 8 hours a day. I would find the hardest chord change in a song, like from E major to B7 and back to E, and I would do it for an hour at a time until I felt I could do it perfectly with no slop, no string buzz, and no perceivable delay. I became obsessed with playing guitar as well as my favorite guitar player in those days, Chet Atkins. Well, mastering Chet has, in my opinion, never been done and I wasn't going to be the first. But I loved his finger-picking style and how he could play a lead and background at the same time or even two songs together.

I have never had any formal guitar training. I play everything by ear, though in the last decade I've started reading and writing guitar tabs. It wasn't until years later that I started learning all the modal forms and focusing more on originality rather than playing what other people already did. I think that's where all those hours of being locked in a room actually were beneficial. I had to use my imagination and creativity to come up with new chords and timings that I found interesting.

Somehow in the next couple of years I started a little neighborhood band with my best friend Tim Juett and had a few other guitar players ask me to teach them. Looking back, I realize how silly that was since I had never had any formal guitar lessons and knew absolutely nothing about music from a technical aspect. But I did know the lead and chords to every popular song and that's all those other guitar players wanted to know.

My Equipment

Until around 1983, I always used a Fender Twin 100W amp with an Ibanez guitar. Then in 1983, I bought a 100W Marshal JCM800 2X12 combo. In1984 I bought a Washburn Guitar which, after wearing out, was replaced with a Jackson SL3 in 2001. Then I bought the Fractal AXE FxII XL for home recording.

I like outboard equipment and used to use MXR for phase and compressors I built myself. In 2000 I started using a Digitech 2102 tube preamp with built-in effects. Then I switched to using the AXE FxII XL which replaced all my outboard stuff with a single rack-mountable unit. In 2021, I bought the Boss Katana and started using that with a mic for all guitar parts.

What am I doing today?

Today, as I have for the last 40 years, I'm programming applications and websites for myself and my wife. The website you're on right now was built from scratch by me as well as sites like HairBoutique.com. Programming is just another way for me to be creative.

I'm not playing in a band anymore but am playing my guitar. Having my own company, well actually two companies, means working seven days a week. But I still find time to play my guitar once or twice a week. And I'm still eager to find things I can't play and practice them until I can.

My son Ryan turned out to be an exceptional drummer. Though I'll always be a lead guitar player at heart, my songwriting is always geared towards writing for a lead singer, something tailored to their style of singing. Maybe I'll find another lead singer. But at my age, that may be a tall order. But I remain hopeful that someday I will again have a band to record.

My favorite guitar players?

For technique, Andy Timmons for his ability to play not only melodic but very fast. His phrasing is exceptional! Yngwie Malmsteen for bringing us neoclassical rock. He's wicked. Stevie Ray Vaughan for giving us Texas blues and his groundbreaking sense of style. Steve Vai who is a perfectionist that also brings a sense of strangeness that I loved in Frank Zappa. John Petrucci for his work with Dream Theater. Eddie Van Halen for breaking ground with tapping (well at least he made it popular). And of course, Chet Atkins.

For creativity, I have to mention Brian May, David Gilmour, Jeff Beck, and Frank Zappa.

What would I change?

Nothing!

My life has been far from perfect. But everything that happened, whether good or bad, was an experience from which I could learn. And the pleasure of playing with some incredible musicians and the opportunity to stand in front of people and play music I loved, can't be replaced by anything else. There's no better feeling.

For me, it has never been about making money or being famous. It was simply that I wanted to play music.

Bands

I played in bands for decades and consider it one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

The Cannons

One day when I was 16 (don't really remember the year for sure) one of my students, named Rabbit, told me about the top Madison band (The Novells) and how they were looking for a new lead guitar player. Of course, I was scared out of my mind at the thought of playing with actual professionals since I had never done that. But for some reason, I called as asked for an audition.

Now I don't know why I called since I didn't think I had a chance of actually landing the job. The leader of the band and bass player was Jerry Cratsenberg, a true professional. All the guys were extremely professional and I was intimidated beyond belief. I'm also sure that at that time, they had to have a good laugh at the fact this 16 year old kid shows up with a Sears guitar and amp to tries out for a pro band that was fronting for the Kingsmen and every other recording band that came through town.

Maybe not knowing who they really were, since I'd never even heard them play, was a blessing. Maybe I was just too ignorant to know any better. Maybe I had some guts I didn't know I had. But I played anyway. We did a few songs and then talked a little.

I don't know how or why, but they asked me to play with them. Jerry took under his wing, took me to a local music store and fronted me the money to buy a new Fender guitar and amp. He helped me learn how to dress, how to shave, how to stand, how to make contact with the audience, and how to do everything else when it came to playing for an audience. You see it turned out that Jerry's philosophy was that anyone can play music but only a few can entertain. And that the entertainers would never be out of work. It's a philosophy that I subscribed to and preached myself to every band I was in. I learned that being a professional means on and off the stage and that you always do your best, well, better than your best. Always!

Around that time the band name was changed from The Novells to The Cannons. From that point on I was playing clubs (yes I was under age), dance halls , a lot of college parties, and anything else that paid money in Wisconsin and Illinois. I don't remember the exact year but Jerry got drafted for the Vietnam war. I never saw or heard from him again until decades later. Since then, we communicate every once and a while.

I will tell you that while in my senior year of high school, I bought 2 brand new cars with the money I was making playing music and played a strip club four nights a week. I don't remember a lot about my senior year as I was too busy playing music.

It wasn't too long before the band broke up; Jerry got drafted and the lead singer, Shane Todd, formed his own band. But we got back together with a new bass player and a new singer that I went to high school with, Lee Larsen Jr. and later a new drummer. All that was left was me, who was pretty new as well, and the original sax player Pete Loebe and incredible player. Pete eventually left and I took over every aspect of the leading the band.

We played all over Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, and Minnesota. We played mostly bars. I'd have to say northern Wisconsin was definitely the most fun. Those people really know how to party!

Personal tragedy

In 1968 I went out one might to book some dates for the band, had a few drinks, and came home around 11:30pm. I was married at the time with a 2 year old boy, Sean. In retrospect, I should have known my wife was crazy but didn't. When I came home I was a little woozy so I laid down on the living room couch to shake it off before going to bed. My wife cam storming out of the room screaming at me, went into the kitchen and grabbed a steak knife, and ran to me and tried to plunge the knife into my heart.

Luckily, I was aware enough to raise my left arm to block the knife. So I didn't die! But the knife tore a large gauge in my left arm and cut some nerves leaving me without movement of my left hand's small and ring finger and partial mobility of my middle finger.

Later that year I applied for a job with the telephone company. Since I was going to electronics school and loved technology, and couldn't play guitar any more, it seems a reasonable thing to do. I remember taking a physical exam where the doctor asked me to hold my arms and hands out straight. When my left hand ended up looking like a curled up claw used to scoop dirt, he said "What's going on there" to which I replied I had an accident. They gave me a number of tests where they stick sensors all over your arm and hand and ultimately told me I'd never have use of those fingers again because nerves don't grow back.

If you know me you'd understand when I said "you're wrong." I then started an exercise program where every spare moment I was squeezing a ball or doing something to strengthen and stretch those muscles. It took a couple of years but eventually I got more movement, less pain, and more strength. Today, 40 some years later, I'm at nearly 100% range of movement with no pain.

So I stopped playing around 1968 and started again in 1969. I had to almost start over and retrain my muscle coordination but I refused to believe I couldn't play guitar.

Back Again

I formed what I call a power a trio called Tracer around 1970. The drummer, Bob Cornell, and bass player, Tracey, were both outstanding players. In a trio, everybody has to work a lot harder to fill the gaps. But it was a blast! I had known Bob for a while and played tennis with him often. He was an outstanding athlete which I think helped make him an incredible drummer.

The guitar in the pictures had a lot of modifications done. I built in active electronics for compression and EQ. I could get a very wide range of tones. A little payoff from going to The Wisconsin School of Electronics.

Like Life, Bands Change - Libertine Rock Symphony

In 1972 the band was reformed when I brought back Lee Larsen, a new drummer, Paul DeSmidt and a new bass player, Dave Erickson. I remember one day going over to Lee's house and saying "Do you want to start another band?" He said "What instruments." I said "Lead singer, Guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards." He said "Who's playing keyboards?" And I said "You."

After convincing Lee he could really play keyboards and sing, we found some other people and started rehearsing. I thought it was a testament to Lee that he was willing to try something totally alien to him and embrace the new challenge.

The band's name was changed to Libertine Rock Symphony. We played from 1972 to 1977. Recording done during that time have been lost. We had one change in 1974 when Dave left the band and Tom Fadner joined to play bass.

Group Therapy in Ft. Lauderdale

In 1977, I moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida because I'd had my fill of cold and snow. I was working full time for the Bell Telephone company and hadn't planned on moving quite that soon as everyone told me that any request for a transfer to Ft. Lauderdale would take years for approval. Mine took 6 weeks and began with a call asking how soon I could be there. So I packed my bags, got in my Corvette and drove 28 hours straight to my new home and, ah, warmth!

Around 1979 I met up with a guy named Bill Panoyer. I didn't have a band but we recorded some acoustics songs just for fun. There are not drums on these recordings. The harmonies were done by me and Julia Keilhofer.

Around 1981 recruited my wife to play keyboards and found some guys I felt compatible with and started a new band called Group Therapy.

We played all around Ft. Lauderdale but mostly at a great club on the beach in Hollywood, about 20 minutes away. The people there we major party people. The club held a couple hundred people and for the first time we carried a full light show including follow spot and a large tri-amp'd PA that sounded great.

These recordings were done around 1989 on a Tascam 80-8 8 track analog machine.

Later, Bill left the group and was replaced by Larry Sandfort who had moved to Ft. Lauderdale from Missouri. Bob (drums) and the bass player we replaced with All on drums and Ray Rivard on bass. Ray turned out to be an exceptional asset to the band with his management help and excellent bass playing.

Move to Dallas

In 1991 I moved to Dallas Texas. Again without a band. But this time I decided to do my own thing knowing how long it might be before finding the right people. Plus, I was getting older and no bunch of 20 year old's was going to want someone my age.

I did some initial records with just me and with no drums at all. The bass guitar on this was a horrible piece of work I picked up for $25. And, now living in the cowboy state I couldn't resist doing one to make fun of those who would pretend to be something they're not.

I spent a fair amount of time and money to acquire dual 20 bit ADAT (8 tracks each) recorders, a great mic preamp, several mics to record drums, and lots of outboard equipment.

I was also getting into MIDI so I bought a Roland JV80 keyboard which had nice strings, fair horns, and decent drums. Now I could be the whole band. Of all the parts, I'd have to say the drums present the biggest challenge.

I don't like the way my voice sounds for lead vocals. But in the absence of a real lead singer and desiring to put my thoughts on something I and others could listen to, I had no other choice but to sing myself and endure the embarrassment. This was recorded around 1997.

Since I'd been playing stronger rock on Florida, I decided to turn to some lighter material and some instrumentals not just focused on guitar.

A new Group Therapy

Then I met Doug Luecke, a bass player, around 1995. We jammed a few times. Doug is a keyboard and bass player. Doug and I just hit it off. It was almost the odd couple because he was heavily routed in music theory and me in what I heard. But together we also found we worked well together. We then met Rob Duplantis a lead singer. Rob has a great voice though I wished I could filter out some of the Texan in him.

Also, my son, Ryan, was now about 14 and had started playing drums. He turned out to be a real asset on the recordings and played live with us at some parties. We didn't get paid, but who cared. We all loved music and just wanted to play. Bering able to play in a band with my son was a dream come true.

The disappointing thing about the tracks off our CD we recorded is that it took months of redoing tracks and editing the bass and vocal parts due to a difference of artistic opinion. By the time I got to the guitar parts, I was so tired of the songs that in most cases I left the original reference track as the final. Of course, now I wish I'd re-recorded the guitar parts because I listen to them and slam myself for the mistakes and bad phrasing in places.

Here's the Dallas boys. I decided to still use the name Group Therapy when we played.

Working a lot

With so many changes in business in 2011-2013, I am consumed in work. Now in my 60s, I just can't stop playing and will until the day I die.

I started recording agin using my Jackson SL1 guitar through a Marshal JCM800. I used a Sennheiser e609 mic on the amp plugged into a PreSonus AudioBox 44VSL which was fed via USB port to my PreSonus Sudio One 2 DAW.

In 2015, I'm still as busy as ever but making more time to play my guitar. This year I bought the Fractal AVE FxII XL but kept the Marshal JCM800 just in case and upgraded to the latest Presonus Studio One version 3 Pro. The AVE FxII XL can mimic any amp, mic, speaker cabinet and effects you can think of. I discovered it can also do things I didn't think of!

On the first song, I found a backing track I liked, added some more instruments, and recorded some various parts.

Next I added the Lexicon reverb and the Antares Auto-Tune 8 plugins to Studio One V3 and wrote an instrumental to try some other features. The second song I wrote from scratch.

In 2018, I undertook a new job and moved 20 miles into a new house I had built from scratch which changed a lot of things in my life.

I also added a number of Waves plugins to my Studio One V3 which ultimately got upgraded to version 4. With my new software I started paying a lot more attention to vocals and the stereo field.

In 2019, I added a more Waves plugins to my Studio One V4 to address some needed work on vocals. Recording, mixing, and music production is a never ending learning process where you try to always the new song better than the last.

From May until November, I got inspired again and wrote 9 more songs. I don't put them on this site until there copyrighted so I'm just releasing them on October 29, 2019. From November until the end of the year, I wrote 4 more songs. One of these has been set to video which I plan on doing with several and releasing them to YourTube.com.

Starting late 2019 I went on a journey to go into a lot more depth on mastering, especially the EQ balance and stereo field. Part of that was making sure all audio had an LUFS level of -13. I found myself inspired by a number of new syth plugins, joined the Roland Cloud to access a number of sounds I was having difficulty finding in Omnisphere, Komplete, and others. Some of those coveted 80s synth sounds just resinate with me.

In 2021, I bought a new guitar, an Ibanez Prestige AZ2402PWF and a Bass Katana-50 MKII. Paired together they make a good lead guitar combination. I used this all on the 2021 second half of the year and all of 2022, so far.

In late 2022 I started using the NeuralDSP Petrucci plugin for all guitar leads finding that it did the best emulation of a wide range of sounds. It was far more natural sounding than micing the Katana.

Retired - sort of

I retired again in 2021. So now I just work frop my wife creating new websites for her and writing, recording, mixing and mastering new songs of my own.

I've also moved on from using real equipment to using more virtual amps and effects for guitar, bass, drums, and keys. I sold my AXE FX II and now use McRocklin and Neural DSP Archetype: Petrucci virtyual amps. My latest purchase was a Charvel

In 1994, Bill Panoyer, and the bass player came out to see me to add some singing and bass playing. I wrote songs for us that better fit Bill's voice.

Julia sang a couple of these songs. All songs written by me and all other instruments played by me. Lots of experimentation.

Can't Help Myself was written in 2016 about life, how we sometimes don't know ourselves and how much I love and need my wife, Karen. I'm not a great singer but can't find anyone to sing my songs that's better. Everything you hear is me.

Sometimes was written about my disdain for how people act today.

Dreams was the first song written using some NI Komplete 11 instruments.

The Journey and I'll See You Tonight were written to get more of a dance feel and uses an electronic kick with sampled drums. Everything, as usual, was written and performed by me.

Uber was recorded years ago with my guitars recorded over a backing track someone else put together. I had forgotten about it and recently found it again. I remastered it.
